Thomas Tuchel urged to stick with misfiring Timo Werner despite the £48million striker scoring just TWICE for Chelsea since November

Darren Bent believes Chelsea must persist with Timo Werner, despite the striker’s continued troubles in front of goal.

The Blues were beaten 5-2 by West Bromwich Albion on Saturday afternoon at Stamford Bridge, their first defeat since January 19.

Timo Werner has score just twice since November for Chelsea

After 14 games unbeaten, Thomas Tuchel must return to the drawing board after being outwitted by Sam Allardyce, with finding a way to get the best out of Werner surely top of his priority list.

Having scored only twice for Chelsea since November 8 and missing a gilt-edged chance on international duty for Germany, the £48million signing looks devoid of confidence.

Despite netting 95 times in 159 games for RB Leipzig before his move to Chelsea, Bent believes Werner is not a prolific striker.

Although he has struggled this season, the former Tottenham and England striker – who scored more than 100 Premier League goals in his career – feels as though Werner should not be withdrawn from Chelsea’s side.

Werner’s bad form hit a new low when he scuffed an easy chance wide during Germany’s shock defeat to North Macedonia

“Take him out of the firing line?” Bent said on Bootroom. “That probably would be the smart thing to do as a centre forward.

“But I question his mentality and I’ve said it before; I said when he got here, he is not a natural goalscorer.

“People said, ‘Well look at his record’, but that still doesn’t mean you are a natural goalscorer and I think that you’re seeing that now with the amount of chances that he misses.

“But I think you just have to persist with it. With that pace, that pace is such a weapon, that he has just got to stick with it.

“Eventually, hopefully, one will go in. But that was the perfect opportunity, the one he set up for Mason Mount, you don’t have to think about it.

“It rolls across the box, you tap it into the empty net, but I think the Germany miss was playing on his mind, which was why he did not shoot.”
