Ole Gunnar Solskjaer insisted he now has ‘two number ones’ as he moved to explain why David de Gea was dropped for Manchester United’s clash against Brighton.
Dean Henderson was handed just his sixth Premier League start of the season for the clash at Old Trafford, a decision which has raised eyebrows and led to questions over De Gea’s long-term future at the club.
Reports earlier this week suggested United could cut ties with De Gea this summer after a decade with the Spaniard between the sticks as Henderson is now favoured as the first choice goalkeeper.
Solskjaer, however, simply stated he has two first choice goalkeepers who are competing for the starting position.
“I have the option of two top goalkeepers and of course both of them want to play as much as possible – that will be decided on merit,” the United manager said.
“Hopefully we have nine plus five games to go, as we want to go all the way in the Europa League, so I’m sure you’ll see both of them play in goal.”
“Both [goalkeepers] know we value them highly,” Solskjær added. “It’s a difficult decision to leave one of them out.”
Speaking to BT Sport before the match, Solskjaer simply said: “I have two number ones.”
