Neymar hailed for ‘outstanding’ display vs Bayern Munich in Champions League but Paris Saint-Germain star told to produce form ‘a lot more’ to be considered a great

Neymar has been hailed for his ‘outstanding’ display in Paris Saint-Germain’s 1-0 defeat to Bayern Munich on Tuesday night.

But the Brazilian has been told to produce that level of performance ‘a lot more’ to be considered a great.

Neymar was very unlucky not to score against Bayern Munich last night

The Ligue 1 champions progressed to the Champions League semi-finals on away goals and will play either Man City or Borussia Dortmund in the final four.

Neymar, who scored in a 3-2 win over Bayern in the first leg, hit the crossbar twice in the second match in another impressive display.

The 29-year-old has often been hailed as one of the best footballers in the world, but fans and pundits have been hesitant to brand him one of the game’s greats due to his inconsistent performances and a penchant for play-acting.

Scotland legend Ally McCoist was very impressed with Neymar’s latest bright outing in Europe’s top competition, but challenged the star to bring a new level of consistency to his game.

He told talkSPORT: “The performance of the night has to be Neymar.

“He was absolutely unbelievable. I reckon it’s the best I’ve seen him.

“He’s needed that type of performance at that level against that level of opposition.

“He’s always shown bits and pieces. We always knew he was top class, but I thought his level of performance for the duration of the match was absolutely outstanding.

“He has to produce that form at that level a lot more.”

Neymar has scored 53 goals in 65 Ligue 1 games since joining PSG for a world record £200million fee from Barcelona in 2017.

Neymar and Kylian Mbappe should NOT be playing in Ligue 1, according to Jamie Carragher

He and teammate Kylian Mbappe have formed a formidable attacking partnership and are considered as two of the top players in world football.

However, former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher insists neither player should be playing in Ligue 1 given their remarkable talent, saying they are too good for PSG.

He told CBS Sports: “If PSG win the Champions League this year, it’ll be a toss-up between him and Mbappe for who wins the Ballon d’Or.

“I don’t think players of that quality of Mbappe and Neymar should be playing for Paris Saint-Germain.

“They shouldn’t be playing in the French league. It’s a poor league. It’s just about these Champions League nights [for PSG players].

“Playing week in, week out in France, players of that quality shouldn’t be playing in that league. It’s not good enough.”
