Jake Paul says Conor McGregor fight is ‘a lot closer than anyone thinks’ as he goads Dana White after making $1million bet on Ben Askren

Jake Paul has revealed a fight between him and Conor McGregor is ‘a lot closer than anyone thinks’ as he prepares for just his third ever boxing bout.

The YouTube sensation made the move into the ring in January 2020 and has since recorded two viral knockouts against novice opponents.

However, he will get his first step up in real quality when he faces former MMA world champion and Olympic wrestler Ben Askren on Saturday evening from the Mercedes-Benz Arena in Atlanta.

Although ‘Funky’ is not renowned for his striking prowess and his sparring videos have cause concerns for some fans, the 36-year-old has still faced some of the most dangerous strikers in MMA and withstood the challenge.

Despite his lack of experience in the ring, opponent Paul has repeatedly called out former two-weight UFC champion McGregor as he eyes the biggest pay day of his professional career and even aimed several extremely insulting barbs towards his family.

The Irishman is currently preparing for his third fight with Dustin Poirier at UFC 264 on July 10, although he has made it clear he intends to return to boxing after his brief foray into the squared circle against Floyd Mayweather in 2017.

Although the 24-year-old from Ohio must get past the indomitable figure of Askren first, he believes a fight with ‘The Notorious’ could happen within the next two years.

“I think we both are on a road to each other,” Paul said at the Triller press conference. “He wants another boxing fight. He wants to fight Manny Pacquiao. He would get toasted. He just keeps on taking Ls.

“So I think him fighting me would not only be his money fight, but it would technically be the easiest challenge, right? Fighting Jake Paul would probably be easier than fighting Manny Pacquiao and it would be just as big.

“I think we’re a lot closer to a Jake Paul-Conor McGregor fight than anyone thinks. I think it could happen in the next 24 months.”

Paul and Askren will square off on April 17

“Conor’s the big name,” Paul added. “He’s a A-list celebrity, and there are very few fighters who are A-list celebrities. So we’ll see what happens. I hope he wins against Dustin, I guess, so that the fight becomes more exciting.”

UFC President Dana White has never been afraid to voice his displeasure at the prospect of seeing novices like Paul fight without ever having to prove their credentials and was even willing to bet $1million the social media sensation would LOSE to Askren.

Upon seeing the bet, the youngster even upped the ante by doubling White’s bet and his words have clearly resonated with him throughout fight week.

“I’m excited for Dana White to lose a million dollars,” Paul said. “But other than that, I’m going to prove millions and millions and millions of people wrong and they have motivated me to become the best version of myself over the last couple of years.”
